Ex-Citi Employee Files Wrongful Termination Lawsuit Alleging Data Concealment from Regulators

Former Citigroup managing director Kathleen Martin sues the bank and COO Anand Selva for wrongful termination, alleging she was fired for refusing to hide critical data from the OCC. Citigroup denies the claims and plans to defend against the lawsuit.

New York, NY – A former managing director at Citigroup has filed a wrongful termination lawsuit against the bank and its Chief Operating Officer, alleging she was fired for refusing to provide regulators with false information.

Kathleen Martin, who joined Citigroup in 2021, claims she was terminated in September 2023 after raising concerns about the bank’s data governance practices. Martin filed her lawsuit in the New York district federal court, accusing COO Anand Selva of instructing her to withhold “critical information” from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) to prevent the bank from “looking bad,” according to a report by Reuters.

The data governance metrics in question are related to a 2020 consent order from the OCC, which required Citigroup to address deficiencies in its risk management and data governance controls.

Martin’s attorney asserts that she was acting in the bank’s best interest and is seeking reinstatement, as well as back pay and bonuses.

A Citigroup spokesperson has dismissed the lawsuit as baseless and stated that the bank will vigorously defend against the claims
