EDX Markets Partners With BitSafe to Bring Bitcoin-Backed CBTC to Institutional Traders

EDX Markets has launched CBTC/USD spot trading, giving eligible institutions access to a Bitcoin-backed asset on the Canton Network through a centralized exchange.

EDX Markets has partnered with BitSafe to introduce spot trading of CBTC, a Bitcoin-backed digital asset issued on the Canton Network. The launch creates a new route for institutional investors to access Bitcoin-backed value within Canton’s privacy-enabled financial ecosystem.

Announced on November 5, 2026, the partnership enables eligible EDX clients to buy and sell CBTC against the US dollar. The listing is CBTC’s first availability on a centralized exchange, according to the companies.

The move brings together EDX’s institutional trading infrastructure and BitSafe’s Bitcoin-backed asset. It also connects Canton’s expanding digital asset ecosystem with a centralized marketplace designed for professional market participants.

However, the launch is about more than adding another Bitcoin-linked trading pair. It reflects a broader effort to make digital assets usable across institutional trading, lending and settlement environments.

EDX Markets Adds CBTC/USD Spot Trading

The initial launch introduces a CBTC/USD spot market on EDX Markets. This allows eligible institutional clients to trade the asset directly against US dollars.

CBTC is designed to represent Bitcoin on the Canton Network. It maintains a stated 1:1 backing with Bitcoin, allowing institutions to access Bitcoin-linked value within Canton’s financial infrastructure.

The companies have outlined additional products for the coming weeks and later stages.

EDX plans to introduce CBTC/USD perpetual contracts in the coming weeks. It also expects to add CBTC/BTC spot trading at a later stage.

In addition, Canton Coin is expected to become eligible collateral for CBTC perpetual trading. This could create another connection between the network’s native digital asset and its Bitcoin-backed market.

The partnership also includes a trading incentive programme. Eligible CBTC trades will receive zero trading fees, while the programme will cover qualifying withdrawal fees. Participants may also receive Canton Coin rewards based on eligible trading volume.

These incentives remain subject to programme terms. They should not be interpreted as a permanent fee structure or guaranteed returns.

How CBTC Brings Bitcoin Into the Canton Network

CBTC is BitSafe’s Bitcoin-backed digital asset. It is designed to bring Bitcoin into Canton’s privacy-enabled environment while maintaining a link to underlying BTC reserves.

Canton Network focuses on financial applications that require controlled information sharing. Its architecture allows participants to conduct transactions while limiting the visibility of sensitive details to relevant parties.

This design can matter for institutions handling trading positions, financing arrangements and asset transfers. Public blockchain transactions can expose information that firms may prefer to keep confidential.

CBTC aims to address part of that challenge by representing Bitcoin within Canton’s ecosystem.

The asset is also designed to support more than simple holding and transfers. Its intended applications include trading, lending and other financial activities.

BitSafe says CBTC uses distributed reserve controls and Chainlink Proof of Reserve to provide transparency into its Bitcoin backing.

The custody model also involves independent operators and threshold-based controls. BitSafe’s published materials identify Finoa, Nethermind, DSRV and BitSafe among the operators involved in securing CBTC.

This structure is intended to reduce reliance on a single party for critical reserve movements. Nevertheless, distributed controls do not remove every operational, governance or technology risk.

Why the EDX Listing Matters for Institutional Access

The EDX partnership gives CBTC access to a centralized institutional trading venue.

That distinction is important. CBTC had already entered the Canton ecosystem through other venues, including Pool Party. The EDX announcement therefore marks its first centralized exchange listing rather than its first trading availability.

For institutional participants, the new market provides another route to access Bitcoin-backed value. It also places CBTC within an exchange environment that combines trading with central clearing infrastructure.

EDX describes its marketplace as an institution-only trading venue. Its business model combines an institutional trading platform with a central clearinghouse.

This structure is designed to offer market participants trading and operational efficiencies. It also reflects the requirements of firms that need established trading processes before engaging with newer digital assets.

The listing could help connect institutions already exploring Canton with a centralized market for CBTC. It may also give existing EDX participants another way to access Bitcoin-linked exposure.

Still, the actual impact will depend on trading activity, market depth and participation. A listing alone does not establish that an asset has achieved meaningful institutional adoption.

Granite River Trading to Support CBTC Liquidity

Liquidity will be a key factor in determining whether the new market attracts sustained activity.

To support the launch, Granite River Trading (GRT) will provide liquidity across EDX’s CBTC markets. Its initial role will focus on CBTC/USD spot trading, with plans to extend support as additional markets become available.

GRT is a proprietary digital asset trading firm. It provides liquidity across centralized and decentralized trading venues and works with token issuers, protocols, exchanges and institutional investors.

The firm has said it will quote two-sided CBTC/USD markets from launch. This means it intends to provide both buy and sell prices, helping establish a functioning market for participants.

Josh Gibson, CEO and Co-Founder of GRT, said institutional adoption requires deep and reliable markets before firms can put Bitcoin to work on Canton.

The involvement of a dedicated liquidity provider is relevant because new trading pairs can struggle without consistent market-making activity.

However, the announcement does not provide specific liquidity commitments, expected spreads or trading-volume targets. Actual market quality will become clearer as trading develops.

EDX and BitSafe Expand the Canton Financial Ecosystem

The partnership also supports Canton’s broader ambition to serve institutional financial activity on blockchain infrastructure.

Financial institutions exploring tokenisation need more than the ability to issue digital assets. They also need trading venues, custody arrangements, liquidity providers and systems for transferring assets between participants.

Bitcoin-backed assets could play a role in that environment. They allow institutions to bring Bitcoin-linked value into financial applications that operate on a different network.

CBTC is intended to provide that connection within Canton.

For BitSafe, the EDX listing expands the distribution of its Bitcoin-backed asset beyond Canton-native trading environments. For EDX, the partnership adds another digital asset to its institutional marketplace.

The companies are positioning the collaboration as a way to support trading, lending and asset transfers across Canton’s ecosystem.

The planned CBTC perpetual market could extend this activity beyond spot trading. It may provide institutions with another instrument for managing exposure to the asset.

The proposed use of Canton Coin as eligible collateral also points to potential interaction between different assets within the network.

However, these developments remain dependent on the products being introduced and the relevant trading arrangements becoming operational.

Reserve Transparency Does Not Eliminate Digital Asset Risk

CBTC’s stated 1:1 Bitcoin backing is central to its proposition. Yet institutional users will need to assess more than the headline reserve ratio.

Chainlink Proof of Reserve is intended to provide verifiable information about the asset’s backing. BitSafe also describes distributed controls designed to prevent a single operator from independently controlling critical reserve movements.

These mechanisms can improve transparency and distribute operational responsibilities. They do not guarantee that every risk has been removed.

Institutions still need to consider custody arrangements, operator dependencies, smart contract security, governance procedures and the process for issuing or redeeming the asset.

They must also understand how CBTC behaves during periods of market stress. A Bitcoin-backed asset can carry risks that differ from holding Bitcoin directly.

The trading venue introduces another set of considerations. Market liquidity, pricing, settlement arrangements and counterparty exposure can all affect the experience of institutional participants.

EDX and BitSafe have not disclosed detailed market-depth targets or comprehensive performance data for the new listing. As a result, the market’s long-term usefulness will need to be assessed through actual activity.

What the Partnership Means for Institutional Bitcoin Markets

The EDX–BitSafe partnership highlights an important direction in digital asset infrastructure: institutions increasingly need ways to use Bitcoin-linked value across different financial environments.

Bitcoin remains a major digital asset, but institutional applications can require privacy, controlled access and integration with existing financial workflows.

Canton offers a network designed around privacy-enabled financial activity. CBTC provides a Bitcoin-backed asset for that environment. EDX adds a centralized trading route for eligible institutional participants.

Together, these components create a broader pathway from Bitcoin-backed value to institutional trading.

The next stages will be important. CBTC/USD perpetual contracts, CBTC/BTC spot trading and Canton Coin collateral eligibility could expand the available market structure.

Yet the success of the partnership will depend on more than product announcements. Institutions will look for reliable liquidity, transparent reserve controls, operational resilience and clear risk arrangements.

TheFinRate Takeaway

EDX Markets’ partnership with BitSafe gives CBTC a new route into centralized institutional trading. It also strengthens the connection between Bitcoin-backed assets and Canton’s privacy-enabled financial ecosystem.

The launch is a meaningful infrastructure development, but its commercial significance remains to be proven. Trading activity, liquidity and institutional participation will determine whether CBTC becomes a useful component of the wider digital asset market.

For now, the partnership shows how exchanges and blockchain infrastructure providers are working to make Bitcoin-backed assets accessible across more specialised financial environments.
