Banco Santander has disclosed a significant data breach involving a third-party provider, which exposed sensitive client and employee information across its operations in Spain, Chile, and Uruguay. The Spanish banking giant confirmed the breach impacted its databases hosted by an external provider, leading to unauthorized access to personal data.
In an official statement, Banco Santander revealed, “We recently became aware of an unauthorized access to a Santander database hosted by a third-party provider. Certain information relating to customers of Santander Chile, Spain, and Uruguay, as well as all current and some former Santander employees of the group, had been accessed.”
Despite the severity of the breach, the bank reassured stakeholders that no transactional information, access credentials, or internet banking passwords were compromised. Banco Santander emphasized that the incident has been contained and that measures are being taken to prevent future occurrences.
The breach, however, underscores the vulnerabilities associated with third-party service providers, highlighting the critical need for robust cybersecurity measures and regular audits to ensure data protection. As financial institutions increasingly rely on external partners for various services, safeguarding client and employee information remains a top priority.
Banco Santander is currently working closely with the affected third-party provider to investigate the breach thoroughly and enhance security
