Norway’s Vipps Launches First Apple Pay Rival for iPhone

Vipps, Norway’s bank-backed mobile payments firm, has become the first company globally to rival Apple Pay on the iPhone, allowing users to make in-store payments with a simple tap.

Game-Changing Access to NFC Technology

This groundbreaking development follows Apple’s agreement with the European Commission to open up the iPhone’s NFC chip technology to third-party providers, granting developers in Europe and other countries access to the contactless payment functionality.

Rune Garborg, CEO of Vipps MobilePay, commented:

“We have fought for years to compete on equal footing with Apple. It feels almost surreal to finally launch our very own solution. Now, it will be a thrilling battle between the world’s biggest brand and Vipps.”

In collaboration with debit network BankAxept and technology vendor Thales, Vipps’ “Tap with Vipps” service is currently available to customers of SpareBank 1, DNB, and over 40 local banks, with more lenders set to join.

Beyond Payments: A One-App Solution

Vipps users can now manage a variety of financial tasks through a single app, including:

  • Sending money to friends
  • Paying in stores and online
  • Settling bills
  • Sending money gifts
  • Joining customer clubs

Garborg emphasized the convenience of consolidating payment activities:

Vipps users benefit from having one app to handle all payment needs. They now have the opportunity to use Vipps in scenarios where they would normally rely on a plastic card.”

The launch signals the beginning of a competitive era between the world’s largest tech player, Apple, and a local banking-backed solution that prioritizes user convenience and financial inclusivity.
