Shift4 Acquires Smartpay in $180M Deal

Shift4 has announced a $180 million acquisition of Australian and New Zealand point-of-sale (POS) provider Smartpay, marking its latest move to expand internationally. The deal, expected to close in Q4 2025 pending regulatory approval, gives Shift4 access to Smartpay’s broad merchant network of over 40,000 businesses across the two countries.

This acquisition is part of a wider strategy by Shift4 to grow its global footprint following the recent scrapping of its own sale process due to underwhelming offers. The publicly listed company, valued at around $7 billion, has been on an aggressive acquisition streak. Earlier this year, it agreed to buy Global Blue for $2.5 billion and previously acquired Canadian gift card firm Givex for C$200 million.

Shift4 CEO Taylor Lauber commented, “This acquisition follows the Shift4 playbook to a tee. It deepens our strategic presence in Australia and New Zealand, providing a significant opportunity to offer our full suite of software and payments solutions in the region.†Lauber pointed to the integration of products like SkyTab POS for restaurants, SkyTab Venue for large-scale events, and hotel payment solutions as key growth opportunities stemming from the Smartpay takeover.

With Smartpay’s established distribution and Shift4’s integrated tech stack, the acquisition positions Shift4 to accelerate go-to-market strategies and expand its end-to-end commerce solutions in the APAC region.
