Tapi Acquires Mastercard’s Arcus Assets to Expand in Mexico

Tapi Strengthens Footprint in Mexico
Argentinian fintech Tapi has acquired key business operations of Mastercard’s Arcus unit in Mexico. The deal covers utility payments, mobile top-ups, gift cards, and cash in/out services. This acquisition is part of Tapi’s strategic push to grow its footprint in Mexico, a market it has identified as crucial for future growth.

Mexico Becomes Top Priority
In 2023, Tapi raised $22 million to support its expansion into the Mexican market. CEO Tomás Mindlin emphasized its importance, stating, “Mexico is very important for us.” With this acquisition, Tapi gains a ready-made infrastructure and user base that allows faster deployment of its fintech solutions in the country.

A Turning Point for Tapi
According to Mindlin, integrating Arcus’s cash and utility payment tools into Tapi’s platform marks a significant milestone. It allows Tapi to offer broader services to banks, fintechs, merchants, and service providers. These additions enhance Tapi’s value proposition, especially in cash-reliant and underbanked regions.

Mastercard Retains Key Functions
While Tapi takes over several Arcus operations, Mastercard will continue managing core services such as payment processing, settlement, and reconciliation. These will remain integrated with Mexico’s Interbank Electronic Payment System (SPEI). Mastercard also retains the Arcus brand, maintaining its presence in the market.

Boosting Financial Inclusion
Tapi’s move supports a larger goal—expanding digital finance across Latin America. By acquiring existing operations rather than building new ones, Tapi accelerates service delivery and reduces entry barriers. The company now strengthens its offerings not just in Mexico, but also across Argentina, Chile, Colombia, and Peru.
