Brazil’s instant payment system, Pix, has introduced a new recurring payments feature called Pix Automático. This addition allows users to authorize periodic payments—like subscriptions or monthly bills—without needing to authenticate every transaction individually. Designed to streamline regular charges, Pix Automático opens up new possibilities for businesses such as gyms, schools, health plans, streaming services, and financial services.
The Central Bank of Brazil anticipates the feature could help capture a massive untapped market: 60 million Brazilians without credit cards. With Pix already adopted by 170 million users—covering 91% of Brazil’s adult population—the potential for recurring digital payments is enormous. Payments firm Ebanx estimates Pix Automático could unlock $30 billion in online recurring payments within two years.
Adoption is already underway. Ebanx has begun integrating the feature, with SaaS firms and global streaming platforms among early users. Payments provider PPRO and digital bank Nubank are also rolling out their implementations. Pix continues to soar in popularity, growing transaction volume by 52% in 2024 and accounting for nearly half of all non-cash payments in Brazil by year-end.
