Nordic digital bank Lunar is making bold moves to modernize its infrastructure and expand its services. The bank announced its migration to Visa-owned cloud-native platform Pismo for processing Visa cards, marking a major step in its evolution toward scalable, modern banking. Pismo, acquired by Visa in 2024, offers a comprehensive suite of core banking and issuer processor capabilities, including card issuing, payments, digital wallets, lending, and financial asset management—all through a single cloud-native platform.
For Lunar, which serves over one million private and business customers across Denmark, Sweden, and Norway, the shift to Pismo is a strategic decision aimed at reducing dependency on legacy systems. CEO Ken Villum Klausen highlighted that the transition will allow the bank to accelerate product development, offer better user experiences, and leverage Visa’s value-added services such as AI-powered fraud protection and a digital-first design. “It gives us the flexibility to build and launch new products independently, driven by the speed, simplicity, and control we believe modern banking should offer,” Klausen stated.
Visa’s Denmark Country Manager, Claus Richter, noted the strategic synergy of the acquisition: “With Pismo under our wings, we’ve broadened our core banking and issuer processing capabilities, enabling us to serve fintechs like Lunar even more effectively.”
In a parallel move, Lunar has also integrated the Wise Platform into its app, allowing users to send money internationally with speed, transparency, and competitive exchange rates. This integration enhances Lunar’s ambitions of becoming the leading everyday bank in the Nordics by providing seamless, low-cost cross-border transactions.
“These developments reflect our commitment to smarter banking through strategic fintech partnerships,” Klausen said. “By adopting Pismo and Wise, we’re laying the foundation for a faster, more flexible, and globally connected banking experience.”
