NatWest to Shut 52 More Branches

NatWest has announced it will close 52 more branches across the UK this year, increasing its total planned closures for 2024 to 105. The bank says the decision is driven by a significant shift toward digital banking, with over 80% of current account holders now relying on online services and most new accounts being opened digitally.

Despite the closures, NatWest is investing over £20 million into its UK banking network next year. This funding will support upgrades to remaining branches, enhance services at Post Offices and banking hubs, and introduce pop-up banking stations in affected areas. These initiatives are designed to maintain access to essential services, especially in communities losing a local branch.

The bank emphasized that it is actively supporting vulnerable and less digitally confident customers. Dedicated support specialists will contact impacted users and help them transition to alternative banking options. In some cases, temporary pop-up branches will be installed to assist users on-site.

A NatWest spokesperson stated, “We’ve been responding to the industry-wide shift toward digital services by broadening what customers can do themselves and offering greater personalization. But we also recognize the need to support those who need help adapting.”

The closures reflect a growing industry trend toward digital-first banking, but they also raise questions about financial inclusion and accessibility, particularly in rural and underserved areas.
