Bhutan Launches World’s First National Crypto Payment System for Tourists

Bhutan has made history by launching the world’s first national-level crypto payment system for tourism, in collaboration with Binance and DK Bank. This groundbreaking initiative allows international visitors to pay for a full range of services in the country using cryptocurrencies via Binance Pay — including airline tickets, hotel stays, guided tours, visa fees, and even everyday purchases like fruit from local vendors.

The crypto transactions are enabled through both static and dynamic QR codes, supported by DK Bank, Bhutan’s first fully digital bank. The system supports over 100 cryptocurrencies and has already been adopted by more than 100 merchants across the country.

This move places Bhutan at the forefront of merging digital finance with real-world use cases in the travel and hospitality sector. It not only enhances convenience for tech-savvy global travelers but also represents a step toward inclusive, innovation-driven economic development.

Richard Teng, CEO of Binance, remarked, “We are excited to partner with Bhutan as we are not only advancing the use of cryptocurrencies in travel but also setting a precedent for how technology can bridge cultures and economies.” Damcho Rinzin, director of Bhutan’s Department of Tourism, emphasized the broader impact, stating: “This is more than a payment solution — it’s a commitment to innovation, inclusion, and convenience.”

As Bhutan repositions itself as a tech-friendly travel destination, this pioneering initiative could serve as a blueprint for other countries looking to integrate blockchain technology into national infrastructure.
