Shopify Enables USDC Payments

Shopify is teaming up with Coinbase and Stripe to bring USDC stablecoin payments to merchants worldwide. This move lets businesses accept USDC with no extra integrations or gateways, seamlessly fitting into their existing checkout systems—including Shop Pay and guest checkout options. Customers can pay with USDC from hundreds of supported crypto wallets, while merchants can choose to receive funds in their local currency or directly in USDC.

With no foreign transaction or exchange fees, this partnership is expected to streamline cross-border payments and offer more flexibility for global e-commerce. Shopify notes that stablecoins like USDC, which are backed 1:1 by U.S. dollar reserves, provide a dependable and stable form of digital currency. Unlike volatile cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin or Ether, USDC maintains a constant value, making it easier for merchants to manage.

Shopify and Coinbase have also introduced a smart contract model to tackle complex checkout requirements like tax calculation and inventory management. The system mimics the credit card flow of “authorize now, capture later,” combining familiar flexibility with the speed and reach of blockchain networks like Coinbase’s Base.

This partnership highlights a growing trend of integrating crypto-native tools into traditional commerce infrastructure, paving the way for stablecoins to play a larger role in everyday online transactions.
