Unzer Joins EPI to Boost Wero Wallet Adoption

Berlin-based SME payments platform Unzer has joined the European Payments Initiative (EPI) to support the expansion of the Wero digital wallet across Europe. Launched in late 2023, Wero leverages account-to-account (A2A) payments via SEPA Instant Credit Transfer protocols, enabling users to send money in under 10 seconds using just a phone number, email address, or QR code.

With 40 million users already onboarded across initial launch markets, Wero is positioned as Europe’s answer to Visa and Mastercard. Unzer now joins forces with industry players like Worldline, Nexi, and Nuvei to move Wero beyond peer-to-peer transactions into e-commerce and point-of-sale environments.

As a principal EPI member, Unzer will begin by rolling out Wero services to merchants in Germany and Austria via its integrated platform, UnzerOne. This will allow businesses to accept Wero payments seamlessly across online and in-store channels without the need for multiple providers or complex integrations.

Robert Bueninck, CEO of Unzer, commented, “Joining Wero is an exciting step for us and the merchants we serve. It allows us to offer a European-built, secure payment option that integrates smoothly across all touchpoints.”
