SoftBank Plans Record ¥1 Trillion Retail Bond Sale to Fund AI Investments

SoftBank Plans Record ¥1 Trillion Retail Bond Sale to Fund AI Investments

SoftBank Group plans to raise ¥1 trillion ($6.3 billion) by selling retail bonds in Japan. This would be the retail bond sale ever by a Japanese company.

The planned seven‑year bond sale happens while SoftBank is increasing its spending on intelligence, such as more investments in OpenAI and other AI projects. Japanese news outlets reported the plan. Softbanks newsroom had not yet posted an official announcement when this article was written.

SoftBank Targets Japans Retail Investors

The proposed sale would greatly expand SoftBanks use of Japans retail bond market.

Jiji Press says SoftBank is preparing ¥1 trillion in corporate bonds for individual investors. The bonds will mature in seven years. The coupon and other terms will be set in early September.

If it reaches that size this sale would set a record for Japanese retail bonds.

SoftBank already holds the record after issuing ¥600 billion in bonds in 2025. The new sale would be much larger than that record.

AI Spending Drives Funding Needs

SoftBank continues to increase its money commitment to AI. This bond sale is part of that.

SoftBank has increased its investment in OpenAI. Is also looking at AI infrastructure. Its filings show that it signed a $40 billion bridge loan in March 2026 with $30 billion for OpenAI money and $10 billion for general corporate use.

SoftBank also made a tranche of money into OpenAI in July according to its investor‑relations statements.

SoftBanks AI strategy is not about software. It also works on AI infrastructure projects, such as its SB Energy business and building data‑center capacity in the United States.

So the new retail bond plan is part of a financing plan for SoftBanks growing AI portfolio.

A Larger Bond Market Presence

SoftBank continues to issue debt across Japans market.

Its official bond data shows unsecured straight bonds that are still out there with some maturing in September 2026 and April 2027.

The company also announced the 69th unsecured straight bonds in July 2026.

The planned ¥1 trillion retail sale would add another source of money as SoftBank deals with its current debt and keeps funding new investments.

Why the Retail Bond Sale Matters

The size of this sale matters for both SoftBank and Japans retail investment market.

Retail bonds let individuals invest in debt and give companies another way to raise money. For SoftBank getting money from households could diversify its funding when its investment plans need a lot of capital.

The move also comes while SoftBanks AI plans need more money.

SoftBank has put itself at the heart of the AI investment boom with its stakes in OpenAI and other tech.. These plans also need careful handling of debt cash flow and financing costs.

SoftBanks AI Strategy Comes With Financing Pressure

SoftBanks big AI spending has drawn a lot of investor attention.

Reuters said the group got a $40 billion bridge loan to boost its OpenAI money. That loan shows SoftBank is relying more on debt along with its assets to fund its AI strategy.

The new retail bond plan could give money and spread funding across more investors.

The sale also shows how much money SoftBank needs to chase its AI goals.

SoftBank is not buying AI models. Its plan also includes AI infrastructure, data centers, cloud computing and robotics which need money.

SoftBank Has Not Yet Confirmed the ¥1 Trillion Offering

Many reports talk about the planned ¥1 trillion sale. Investors should know the difference between what is reported and what is officially confirmed.

SoftBanks press‑release page lists its bond news but it does not yet show a release confirming the proposed ¥1 trillion retail sale.

The final coupon, issue date investor terms and other conditions could change before SoftBank officially starts the sale.

TheFinRate Take

SoftBanks planned ¥1 trillion sale would be a landmark deal for Japans corporate debt market.

Importantly it shows the huge money needs behind SoftBanks bold AI strategy. As SoftBank expands its stake, in OpenAI and AI infrastructure having diverse funding sources becomes very important.

If it reaches the reported size the deal would also show how Japans retail bond market is becoming a funding channel for one of the worlds biggest AI investors.

For now the ¥1 trillion number is a reported plan, not a confirmed SoftBank sale. The final terms will be clear once SoftBank releases the details.
