PayPal Launches Contactless Mobile Wallet and Pay Later for In-Store Purchases in Germany

PayPal has launched a contactless mobile wallet in Germany, marking a global first for the company as it deepens its push into physical retail. The latest version of the PayPal app will soon allow users to pay with a simple tap of their phone at any location that accepts Mastercard contactless payments.

The rollout introduces several new features tailored to the German market. Most notably, PayPal’s Pay Later offering—previously limited to online transactions—will now be available in-store under the new “Ratenzahlung To Go” feature. Shoppers can split payments into 3, 6, 12, or 24-month instalments, providing greater flexibility at the point of sale.

In addition, users can access cashback rewards by activating offers in the PayPal app. Once turned on, cashback is automatically earned with each contactless PayPal purchase across a variety of participating German retailers.

Joerg Kablitz, managing director for PayPal in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, said:

“Cash has a role to play, but we know that many consumers and businesses are ready for innovative alternatives. Put simply, we believe PayPal is better than cash. Our app will make it easy and safe to pay with your phone in stores; it will give you more choice in how and when you pay; and even better—PayPal will help put money back in your pocket.”

With this launch, PayPal continues to challenge traditional payment methods and assert its presence on Europe’s high streets.
