Nuvei has joined the European Payments Initiative (EPI) as one of the first providers to integrate the Wero digital wallet into merchant online checkouts. Wero, launched in late 2023, leverages account-to-account (A2A) payments via SEPA Instant Credit Transfer protocols to enable real-time money transfers in under 10 seconds using phone numbers, email addresses, or QR codes. The wallet has already attracted 40 million users in its initial wave of European markets.
Starting this September, Nuvei merchants will be able to offer Wero as a payment method at checkout, marking a key milestone in EPI’s effort to rival global card giants Visa and Mastercard with a European-grown alternative. This follows a similar partnership between Wero and Nexi to connect with German merchants.
Future features planned for the Wero wallet include buy now, pay later (BNPL) options and loyalty programs, aiming to make it a comprehensive digital wallet experience for consumers across Europe.
EPI CEO Martina Weimert said the partnership with Nuvei will significantly accelerate adoption, providing both consumers and businesses with a seamless and sovereign European payment solution.
